Two Postdoctoral Research Associateships, Yale Center for British Art

The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) is offering two Postdoctoral Research Associateships, one each in the following departments: 1) Research and 2) Exhibitions and Publications. These Postdoctoral Research Associateships are for recent recipients of the PhD (degree granted within the last two years) in the field of British art. The PhD must be in hand by the time the position begins. The Postdoctoral Research Associateship may be held for up to three years, and it is expected that the post-holder will be pursuing long-term professional employment during the period of hire. The Research Associate will receive an annual salary of $45,000, as well as funding to attend one professional confer-ence annually, and modest travel funds for work on behalf of the department and for personal research, as determined by the Head of each department.

A preference for either position may be stated in the application but is not required. The deadline for receipt of applications is September 1, 2010. Interviews are expected to take place in early Fall 2010. Applications should include a cover letter, a CV, and a writing sample. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will report directly to the Head of Research of the Yale Center for British Art and will also work with the Associate Head of Research as directed. Primary duties will include research and administrative tasks associated with specific scholarly projects, as well as other departmental duties, led by the Head of Research or Associate Head and in collaboration with other colleagues at the Center. Tasks will include the conception, development, and organization of an annual graduate student symposium; assistance with the development and organization of research department seminars, workshops, and colloquia; and assistance in the oversight of the Center’s visiting scholars. The post-holder will also assist in the full-scale scholarly cataloguing of the collections and will be an integral participant in the development of full scholarly content of the museum’s online database.

The Research Associate will be expected to provide support for research carried out by the Head and Associate Head, as well as visiting scholars to the Center. S/he will also be expected to engage in his/her own scholarship and will be given time to pursue research in his/her own areas of specialization.

exhibitions and publications

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work directly with the Head of Exhibitions and Publications of the Yale Center for British Art. Primary duties will include research and administrative tasks associated with specific intellectual and curatorial projects undertaken or determined by the Head. Tasks will include working in association with YCBA curators and guest curators in the development and administration of special exhibitions (both co-organized with other institutions and in-house) and participating in the production of various YCBA publications. The post-holder will assist in the full-scale scholarly cataloguing of the collections and will be an integral participant in the development of scholarly content of the museum’s online database. The Research Associate will additionally undertake library and archival research on designated topics or issues and participate in projects undertaken with other departments within the Center and across the university, as well as with other institutions in the museum world and academe.

The Research Associate will be expected to support the research interests of the Head as well as outside guest curators working on exhibitions for the YCBA, with full credit given for his/her contributions. S/he will also engage in scholarship of his/her own and will be given time to pursue research in his/her own areas of specialization.
